Disaster Assistance for Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands
As we know from our experiences after Hurricane Katrina, the recovery process will be difficult and prolonged. All assistance will make a difference. Jose Cot, Puerto Rican-born New Orleans lawyer and New Orleans Chapter board member, has reached out to Chief Judge Aida Delgado-Colón and Judge Gustavo Gelpí of the District of Puerto Rico. The New Orleans Chapter is assisting in the relief efforts through the national organization and the local chapter in San Juan, and the gift cards and donations will be distributed to those in need.
Jose has also been in contact with Chief Justice Maite Oronoz Rodríguez and Justice Roberto Feliberti Cintrón of the Puerto Rico Supreme Court. They are all most appreciative of our efforts. The Chapter encourages all of you to help in any way that you can – whether by donating funds, gift cards, or by volunteering through charitable organizations and churches. We are grateful for your help and solidarity during these challenging times for Puerto Rico.
How to Help…
Gift Card Drive to Address Immediate Needs. The New Orleans Chapter is collecting gift cards to assist with immediate needs. Any denomination will be appreciated. Gift cards for food, supplies and clothing, from national vendors that are present in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands such as Walmart, Sam’s Club, Home Depot, Walgreens, and others are most helpful. Gift Card Donations may be made in person or mailed to our office, 500 Poydras Street, B-245, New Orleans.
Financial Donations to the Federal Bar Foundation. The Foundation will designate funds from the Hurricane Disaster Fund to support FBA Chapters and legal aid and other organizations working to provide legal representation and legal education to impacted communities. Your donations will help to provide the necessary legal resources to affected citizens as they try to rebuild their lives. The Foundation will review legal relief efforts in Puerto Rico and find good matches for our members’ donations. Please make a donation to the Hurricanes Disaster Fund or by check payable to the Foundation of the Federal Bar Association, delivered to 1220 North Fillmore St., Ste. 444, Arlington, VA 22201
SOLACE provides a way for the FBA legal community to reach out in small, but meaningful and compassionate ways, to FBA members throughout the nation and those related to them in the legal community who experience a death, or some catastrophic event, illness, sickness, injury, or other personal crisis.
